After serving in France in 1917, as a YMCA Canteen Secretary (he was too old to enlist in the Army), he developed a love affair with France and everything French.
He subscribed to a French newspaper, although he couldn't read French, and got his daughter Chrystal, who learned French in high school, to read it to him when she had learned enough.
He changed his name from Emmett Stanley to E. LaFollette Stanley and claimed relationship through his mother to Senator "Fighting" Bob LaFollette of Wisconsin. This relationship has never been proven.
He was called Doc Stanley by his business acquaintances, although I don't know why.
